CANCER patients face fresh upheaval to get treatment after under-fire health chiefs admitted a vital unit is set to close.
The haematology unit at the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton – which is part of the overall chemotherapy centre at the Stockton hospital which cares for hundreds of cancer patients from Hartlepool and East Durham – is being axed as bosses at the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust are struggling to recruit new consultants.
The unit has eight beds, and treats patients with both malignant and non-malignant diseases of the blood including cancer and leukaemia.
The closure will have no impact on the existing chemotherapy/haematology day unit at Hartlepool’s hospital.
Any town-based patients who have needed the specialist treatment have previously been transferred to Stockton.
The patients - and their families or visitors - now face an even longer trek with the unit in Stockton likely to be phased out by November.
The Trust’s management is now in talks with Sunderland Royal Hospital and the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, to see if they can take patients who would previously have been treated at North Tees.
The news is the latest blow to hit the Trust in recent months, and comes just a week after plans were revealed to close two nurseries at the hospitals in Hartlepool and Stockton with the loss of 54 jobs.
Dr David Emerton, medical director of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Most of our haematology patients are treated as outpatients and as day patients.
“These services on both sites are unaffected.
“However in the past few years we have been unable to recruit the number of consultants we need to meet the complex needs of patients requiring care as an inpatient at the unit at the University Hospital of North Tees.
“In the future different arrangements will be needed for the small number of patients with the most serious haematological conditions who need to be admitted as an inpatient to a specialist haematology unit.
“Patients currently in our unit will continue to be looked after there, but we are in discussions with the hospitals north and south of us to ensure that any new patients can be admitted to hospitals near to their home.”
Save Our Hospital campaigner Keith Fisher described the move as “another step in the wrong direction” but added that he wasn’t surprised the Trust was struggling to recruit new staff.
He said: “When businesses are insecure, they will always struggle to recruit.
“And both of our hospitals are insecure. There is a shadow over both of them because of the Wynyard situation.
“The sooner they scrap that plan and come up with something to reinvigorate health provision in our area, the better.
“But until they have the bottle to do that, then I’d imagine they will always struggle to recruit.
“And while all this goes on, once again we are left with a situation where you and I, as members of the public and patients, are suffering.
“Not for the first time, it’s another step in the wrong direction.”
Your comments / support / suggestions will always be appreciatedKeith Fisher
A further update from our Save our hospital campaigner, Keith Fisher
Hi again Kath
Clearly those to blame for the disgraceful demise of our acute medical provision are The Trust and in Particular their Chief Executive --Foster
He , his board, and sadly many local politicians continue to deflect the blame and responsibility from themselves .
Please believe me I have tried EVERY avenue to make formal complaint about them and their unacceptable disregard of public demands,
I have been calling them "The Untouchable's " for years and whilst I never intended that to be funny it is now the only truly accurate way to describe them and that reality should be frightening to us all !
THEREFORE -- It is my long held opinion that in a democracy the only way to control, to curtail or to remove such unacceptable people is via political pressure !
The other reality is that whilst we win every debate, meeting or even opinion on the health care matter the frustration is ALWAYS manifest when the important voting hands go up in unison in direct opposition to the clear public opinion -- checkout the minutes !
You ask me "what can we do" Kath and I'm afraid that my considered opinion is that the only way forward ( IS STILL) by direct personal pressure from all of you upon whoever represents you politically.

Hello Mr. Fisher,
Just writing to you to let you know my concerns about the way things are going with our local hospital.
We have watched over the last months the bit by bit closure of what was an effective, well run hospital serving the people of Hartlepool.
Recently my husband had a hip replacement and was in Hartlepool hospital for only 7 days. The operation was a resounding success as was his recovery to full health and strength, supported by the hospital services and our GP. This story is not an isolated one. Talk to people around the town and the opinion is that the service provided by our hospital is second to none.
Lately, I have had several visits as an outpatient and although the department was very very busy it was managed well and care was taken to ensure that all information was given to the waiting patients.
Travelling out of town for appointments is very difficult when you do not have access to your transport. Even if you qualify for an ambulance journey I know by experience when one of my family travelled to receive cancer treatment, it is horrendous.
Gradually the facilities in Hartlepool are being closed leaving us with a unit that will eventually become a non functioning unit and eventually close.
This is not what we want or need. The people of Hartlepool deserve better. We want the best care that is possible when it comes to our health.
The closure of the A & E department especially hits hard. It is scary to think that your life could depend on there being an ambulance available to come to your aid quickly and then that the traffic during the journey to North Tees hospital is such that your journey is not delayed.
What price life? A five to ten minute journey to a local A & E MUST in anyone's estimation be better than what, a 30 minute journey (that's supposing you can get one of our overworked ambulances to arrive promptly) to an out of town hospital.
They say cost is the main reason for the closure. I am not an accountant or an economist. What I am is a person who is afraid that if this situation is not sorted tit may cost a life.
Can I apologise if this e mail is a bit disjointed and not eloquent - but I do feel passionately that we need our hospital services to stay here in Hartlepool.
Yours sincerely

NEW RESPONSE FROM KEITH
Keith Fisher received a letter from one of our members here is his response:
How very very nice of you Marg.-- to be concerned about me me and my self neglecting habits (which are well known)
I'm afraid I'm not the lad you remember in Catcote Road
I've only lived in Clavering and the only " Fisher's" in town who are related to me are my Wife and our Son
Your words of encouragement are very kind of you Marg and are much uplifting to me
To be honest -- I sometimes become depressed about the lack of support and the fact that people will make full and proper complaint to me but will not permit me to quote them
I have never understood the dysfunctional unions, associations, or whatever they are who represent the good people WHO WORK OR WORKED IN OUR HOLDFORTH ROAD HOSPITAL
How they have sat back in their offices and watched the demise of our hospital from its highest possible star rating -- I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND
In addition to being our only only remaining hospital in town -- it was the second biggest employer in town too !
I've never seen nor heard any officials or even direct workers in uniform at any of our previous meetings, marches or protests !
It is obvious to me that they are under threat about their jobs and therefore reluctant to put their heads above the parapet -- but please consider that I have had MY head above the parapet all of my life and therefore it is difficult to be forbearing when I feel alone
If you yield to threats from self appointed people like The Trust -- THEY WILL THREATEN YOU AGAIN !
Please PLEASE -- don't think for a moment that any of these statements are addressed to you personally Marg, but --sometimes I need to say them to SOMEONE
Very recently I received a supportive email, similar to yours, from another lady (who, like you, probably obtained my address through Derrick Rowbothams fine website)
Besides other things the Lady politely asked "What are we to do ?"
Please find that I have pasted below my personal comments and suggestions to The Lady for YOUR consideration and discussion with your friends ---

New post by Keith 22.10.2014Hi Campaigners
Please find pasted below a posting which I have made in today's Mail on line in response to their story about spending on private medicine
The spend on "private ambulances" is the tip of a massive increase in cost which was , and still is, incurred by the closure of our A&E and the moving of our other essential services out of Holdforth Road
The vast majority of the extra cost is conveniently invisible to the bean counters because it is spent individually by the patients and their families who provide their own transport to Stockton
Sadly the "real increase in cost" is not measurable in Sterling because it is the direct danger and increase in suffering to us all.
I have deliberately used the term "all" because even if we have not had to travel to Stockton YET the reality is that it is a matter of "when" and not "if"
THAT is the cost which is unacceptable to all of us in Hartlepool and South East Durham who live in the natural catchment area of our previously star rated hospital.
The Trust continue to ignore what we mortals say but they also ignored the election PROMISES which were made publicly, in this town, by a Labour Prime Minister , his Health Minister and their prospective Hartlepool MP
If the financial cost of their folly is becoming unbearable to The Trust then we are now all entitled to say "we told you so"
But
Knowing that we will be ignored again we must DIRECTLY call upon the political leaders, who were made liars by The Trust, to demand a return of our services.
Your comments / support / suggestions will always be appreciated

Hi Campaigners
A senior reporter from The Hartlepool Mail has just rang me to ask for comments upon statements from Iain Wright which are to be published in tomorrow's Mail -- regarding him now fighting to save our hospital
I replied to The Mails questions immediately by phone and then confirmed my comments via email
I have posted them below and here ask you to confirm that MY comments represent those which would have been made by YOU --
XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Thank you for the phone call
Please accept these bullet points repeated below as confirmation of our conversation
Wrights course change is actually a full 180 degree reversal
He has vigorously supported a Wynyard Hodpital since it's inception
Therefore I could only consider his reassurances about Saving Our Hospital to be insulting lies because there was never a chance of having our Holdforth Road Hospital AND a Wynyard Hospital
Surely anyone can see his dramatic course change as blatant electioneering and thereby insulting to all voters----
ESPECIALLY SOH Campaigners

FURTHER UPDATE 29TH OCTOBER 2014
Hi Campaigners,
Earlier today I advised you all that without reference to, or permission from, any of you I had made direct and immediate quotations to our local newspaper in response to their questions about Mr Wrights apparently "new stance" about our hospital
I deliberately asked for your personal comments because I'm always conscious that when asked for an immediate quotation I may well exceed the feelings and intentions of other campaigners
I have received two feed backs from, amongst our broad ranks of campaigners, and I've posted them below for your perusal --
" Perfect - 'nail on head'! "
And ---
Hi Keith,
I couldn't agree more that Ian Wright's comments are more to do with next year's election than anything else. How can anyone trust him no matter what he says when he assured that electorate (along with senior Labour figures) that Hartlepool Hospital would not close. There was no support from him as more and more services were taken from Hartlepool slowly taking the life out of the hospital. Only when the nursery at Hartlepool Hospital was threatened with closure did he start to voice his concern. Again that was more to do with electioneering and supporting Unison employees. Hopefully come the election next year, the electorate of Hartlepool will be able to give their opinion of Ian Wright!!
Keep up the good work Keith!
Best wishes,

30TH OCTOBER UPDATE FROM KEITH FISHER
Hi Campaigners
A senior reporter from The Hartlepool Mail has contacted me by phone this morning
I'm assured that The Mail are launching a concerted effort to reach across any political divides and organise a united front of pressure / petitions / efforts to make direct demands of Foster and his Trust
I applauded the principle involved in combining any and all efforts to SOH
My quotation was, and is ----
I don't care who Saves Our Hospital -- as long as it is saved
But --
I am recommending to my SOH campaigners that they measure people by what they actually DO BEFORE MAY and not what they PROMISE TO DO AFTER MAY !
Please watch out for this new Hartlepool Mail campaign wherever you go and afford it your support at every opportunity
Your comments / support / suggestions will always be appreciated

This Lying toad will now try to back a motion to return key services to our Hospital, His back is against the bloody wall and he is afraid of the firing squad, well Mr Wright, this lesson will teach you that acting in the interest's of the electorate is your primary duty".

Taken from Hartlepool post November 6th CIVIC leaders in Hartlepool will meet local health trust chiefs next week (Tuesday 11 November) to discuss the future of the town’s hospital services.
It follow...s the recent announcement that the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has decided to ‘pause’ its efforts to create a new hospital at Wynyard because any decision is highly unlikely to be made prior to next May’s General Election.
Council chiefs have moved quickly to arrange the meeting which will take place at the Civic Centre. Hartlepool Council will be represented by Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, the Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Martin-Wells, chair of the Council’s Audit and Governance Committee and its vice-chair Councillor Stephen Akers-Belcher.
The North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust will be represented by Chief Executive Alan Foster and Chairman Paul Garvin.
Speaking today, Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher said: “The Council is fully aware of the strength of feeling throughout the whole town and the frustration in relation to hospital services.
“I’m also aware that many councillors have requested immediate action, including a public meeting, so that townspeople can unite to ensure that Hartlepool has the best possible hospital services in the 21stCentury.
“I am encouraged that the hospital trust has agreed to our request for an urgent meeting and we will be pressing upon them that it is the Council’s desire to hold a public meeting at the earliest possible opportunity to give everyone the opportunity to get involved and help influence the future of hospital services in Hartlepool.”

I do consider that ANY deliberate transformations of our Hospital spaces for other than clinical reasons are all very dangerous steps within a pre-plan for Hartlepool hospitals demise to become unrecoverable.
The "difficulty" in reading my up-date is because I'm finding it very difficult to obtain any straight forward answers to two very simple questions --
1) Are any office workers to be re- located to within ex ward space at Holdforth road
2) Are the personnel involved employees of HBC
I am trained to recognise any "play on words" and therefore I will always re-ask my question until the answer is clear and unambiguous -- hence the difficult tabulation and reading --(Sorry)
QUESTIONS & ANSWERSOne Councillor kindly replied promptly to my questions and said he had contacted Mr. Stubbs and my understanding is that he was told that ---"no council people were planned to move into hospital space"
A.N.Other Councillor then kindly replied too --ANSWER --We have no current plans to move council staff onto the hospital site. It is our intention to integrate health and social care teams in order to provide a better service for the public, and we are currently looking for an appropriate venue to locate the staff teams that are responsible for improving the discharge of patients from hospital and providing community based support.
Kind regards,
I then expressed an opinion that a play on words may STILL be being applied in that PERHAPS -- no one may be moving from The Civic but my information was that they WERE TO MOVE from "Herons ? at Central Estate ?"
supplementary ANSWER --- I have a meeting with the Hospital Trust next week and I am aware of staff commissioned by the CCG moving from the Pheonix Centre.
Kind regards,
My Re-QUESTION / request for plain speaking --Brought this ANSWER -- "My understanding is they are part of the community team and are going to hospital. Hopefully I will know more after next week's meeting."Kind regards
This being still unclear to me I then asked immediately ----
QUESTION-Please confirm whether or not --
" THE COMMUNITY TEAM "
are employees of HBC
Perhaps I should know and recognise such titles but YOUR clarification would be appreciated
To date there has been no reply to this request ( last above) for a simple yes / no answer to my simple honest question
"Part Two of Reality up-date "
Any reference to the Vote of no Confidence -- must not be confused with my lay-person proposal to "withdraw all cooperation between HBC and The Trust"
The vote of no confidence was passed unanimously at a reconvened full council meeting which had been relocated to within the College of FE.
It was then via ME from the public gallery in The Civic's Chamber that I suggested that withdrawal all cooperation with The Trust must be appropriate --
There were copious cry's of alarm against my suggestion by -- ( in no order of merit and from my memory) Messrs. STUBBS, WELLS, HALL, BRASH and others who screamed that it would. "stop The Trust from working" and ridiculed me personally for suggesting such an action !
In my naivety I always thought that was the whole point of any vote of no confidenceAndLike all other resolutions it was only as effective as it's IMPLEMENTATION
Therefore -- It is my considered opinion that over the recent years ----In direct contradiction of the principles within a "NO CONFIDENCE RESOLUTION" The Trust had been allowed to continue along their PATHWAYS out of Hartlepool ONLY BY DIRECT COOPERATION FROM HBC
